The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering/Environmental Technology

Create sustainable innovations

How will we live tomorrow? Which technologies will influence our economy and quality of life?  And how will our environment and climate fare? These are all questions that revolve around precisely one topic: Sustainability.

The careful use of limited raw materials and access to environmentally friendly energy are the central challenges of our time. This is why the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering/Environmental Technology awards the three future Topics

  • Bio and environmental process engineering
  • Digital Mechanical Engineering
  • energy technology

and thus gives a new impetus to sustainability. Join us and reshape the future.

Studying high tech - shaping the future - living sustainable

This is how we teach and research every day for an innovative and sustainable future in the fields of plant and mechanical engineering, mobility, mechatronics, energy and process engineering, biotechnology and environmental technology. With our engineering degree programmes, we stand for the development of innovative high-tech products and sustainable technologies.  Research and teaching in our high-tech laboratories form a special kind of unity.

Research at the Faculty of Mechanical/Environmental Engineering

The Faculty of Mechanical/Environmental Engineering works on a wide range of practice-oriented research and development projects. The focus is particularly on applied research. All research projects are practice-oriented and carried out in cooperation with regional, national and international partners from a wide range of industries.

Extract of current research projects at the faculty:

Nanochemistry
As part of this research cluster, new types of microfluidic analysis sensors are being developed for environmental and biosensor technology. In addition, new types of energy storage devices based on nanoporous materials are being researched.

Competence Center for Combined Heat and Power
Our research with the Competence Center for Combined Heat and Power covers the entire range of applications of CHP plants, with various fuels and technologies as well as with the further development of combined heat and power systems.

Biotechnology
Research in the field of bioprocess engineering focuses on the curricular economy or bioeconomy. Microorganisms and enzymes are used to convert waste materials or even entire waste streams into high-quality products.

Smart Factory
A smart factory is being created at the Digital Campus of OTH Amberg-Weiden, whose scientific focus is on implementing the vision of a versatile factory of the future. The research objective is to develop an autonomous, decentralized control concept that takes flexible material flow strategies into account.

Laboratories in the Faculty of Mechanical/Environmental Engineering

The more than 30 high-tech laboratories with modern equipment in the fields of mechanical engineering, mechatronics and environmental technology offer sufficient space for practical training and application-oriented research. We are particularly proud that our laboratories have been recognized in the CHE University Ranking: in the category "Laboratory equipment" we have achieved a top position everywhere.
