Donation campaign for the reconstruction of the National University ‘Zaporizhzhya Polytechnic’

The National University ‘Zaporizhzhya Polytechnic’ (NU ZP) was repeatedly bombed on 7 July 2025. The drone attack destroyed a main building and severely damaged student residences, laboratories and lecture halls. Numerous technical devices and equipment used for research and teaching purposes were rendered unusable.

In August 2025, the OTH AW Competence Centre Bavaria – Central and Eastern Europe (KOMO) initiated a fundraising campaign to support the reconstruction of its partner university. To this end, it worked closely with the aid organisation Space-Eye e.V., which has extensive experience with humanitarian aid projects. The non-profit association collected and stored the donations and organised the transport of the collected materials to the conflict zone.

OTH AW forwarded the appeal for donations to the university family and the PartnerCircle companies. Used mobile phones, laptops and tablets were collected, and with the help of students and staff, fruit nets were folded that can be used as drone defence. The Rotary Clubs from Weiden also contributed with a monetary donation.

The Offenburg University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Offenburg) was another German partner university that participated in the relief effort.

At the beginning of December 2025, around 16,000 items weighing 14 tonnes, consisting of 750 boxes and 220 loose items, were finally delivered to Zaporizhzhia. These ranged from computers and school furniture to medical products and several thousand square metres of protective netting to textiles and equipment for the destroyed dormitories, laboratories and lecture halls. Among other things, Space-Eye provided a large generator to supply power to the university.

The National University “Zaporizhzhya Polytechnic” (NU ZP) is an important partner of OTH Amberg-Weiden in the DAAD-funded projects Dillugis (2022-2025) and, recently, TANDEM-UA-DE (2025-2029). As part of these projects, two Ukrainian scientists from Zaporizhzhia are working at the university. With this donation campaign, OTH Amberg-Weiden wants to help ensure that academic exchange, research activities and the education of Ukrainian students can continue even under the most difficult conditions.
