Region of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)
The region of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is not a clearly defined geographical area. Depending on the context, the term can be defined more narrowly or more broadly.
In the narrower sense, Central and Eastern Europe comprises the countries that joined the European Union as part of the EU's eastward enlargement between 2004 and 2007: Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Croatia has also been part of the European Union since 2013.
In a broader sense, the term includes all former communist countries that are geographically part of Europe. These include Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine.
The OTH AW Competence Centre Bavaria - Central and Eastern Europe (KOMO) focuses on the university and research landscape of this region. The aim is to actively promote academic and personal exchange between members of OTH Amberg-Weiden and partners in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and to support practice-orientated, sustainable cooperation.
