At the Laboratory of Bioprocess Engineering, innovative bioreactor systems are developed and investigated through an interdisciplinary approach. Research focuses on understanding how light, magnetic fields, and other environmental factors influence the growth, metabolism, and adaptability of living systems. Using modern molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques, metabolic pathways are analyzed to gain deeper insights into biological processes and to harness them for sustainable applications.

A particular focus lies on the upcycling of residual material streams and the conversion of sunlight, CO₂, and nutrients into valuable biomass. The overarching goal is to develop biological production systems that conserve resources, close material cycles, and contribute to climate protection and sustainable economic development. Research is carried out in close collaboration with regional and international partners and ranges from publicly funded research projects to application-oriented development projects with industrial partners.

With its cultures of microorganisms, algae, basidiomycetes, and other living systems, the Laboratory of Bioprocess Engineering is arguably the liveliest laboratory at OTH Amberg-Weiden—a place where billions of cells grow, adapt, and help shape the biotechnology of tomorrow.
