Applied Business Informatics – Connect people, business and technology!

How can processes be made smarter? Which data drives real decisions forward? And how does technology become a success factor in a company?
In the Applied Business Informatics (AWI) programme, you will learn to combine business and IT in a practical way – with a mix of digitalisation, management and technology.
Your studies: application-oriented & individual. You will spend around 50% of your study time on practical projects, in laboratories, on case studies and on a six-month internship – closely linked to companies in the region. Our promise: you will come into contact with at least ten companies during your studies. This allows you to build up your professional network early on – and gain real insights.
Whether you prefer to broaden your horizons or specialise is up to you: you can shape your profile in the elective area – for example, with a focus on AI management, e-commerce, smart logistics or digital business consulting. Those who pursue one of these specialisations will receive a certificate in their chosen core competence in addition to their Bachelor's degree. Learning takes place in small groups, with modern technology, direct supervision and real-world challenges – hands-on, networked and future-oriented.
Career prospects

Business informatics has been one of the most popular fields of study for years.
With a focus on applied IT and business practice, the Applied Business Informatics programme puts you in a particularly secure position for the future. Graduates are sought after across all industries – and can often choose their job.
Today, companies are constantly faced with the same questions: What does new technology offer us? What do we really need? How can we use it to create real added value?
You develop the answers – as a bridge builder between IT and business.
After completing your studies, you could work as, for example:
- Project manager for digital transformation
- Business analyst or data analyst
- Consultant for IT-related business processes
- Process or product manager for digitalisation
- E-commerce, social media or logistics expert
- Founder of a digital business model
Whether in corporations, medium-sized companies, start-ups or as a founder, your bachelor's degree qualifies you for demanding tasks.

HIGHLIGHTS of the course

Practical experience, tools, teamwork – and you right in the middle of it all: Applied Business Informatics means not just learning how it works, but applying it directly. What to expect? A degree programme in which around half of the content consists of real-world practice. Whether in project seminars, case studies, laboratory units or the integrated six-month practical semester – you will work on real-world issues, often in collaboration with companies from the region.
You will become part of interdisciplinary teams, present your results to partner companies and gain valuable experience with methods from everyday professional life. You will work with modern tools – from business intelligence software and process modelling to ERP systems such as SAP.
Theory? Yes – but always application-oriented. Instead of traditional lectures, you can expect interactive teaching formats, blended learning, agile working methods and research-oriented projects in modern laboratories.
Another special feature is that AWI is not a rigid course of study. You design it yourself – with freely selectable specialisations, practical elective modules and individual project work tailored to your interests and goals. In short: at AWI, you will not only grow professionally, but also become an active part of the digital economy from the very first semester – with responsibility, freedom to act and a close connection to reality.

Structure
In the Applied Business Informatics (B.Sc.) programme at OTH Amberg-Weiden, you will earn 210 ECTS credits in seven semesters – in an interdisciplinary, practical and flexible programme. You will start with a solid foundation in economics, computer science and digitalisation: business administration, economics, mathematics, IT systems, software fundamentals and business process modelling are just as much a part of the curriculum as digital transformation, data analysis and business intelligence.
From the third semester onwards, you will deepen your knowledge in application-oriented modules such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), process management, low-code development and business informatics projects with companies. You will use modern tools such as SAP, data visualisation systems and modelling software directly in a practical context.
What makes this programme special is that you can tailor your studies to your individual needs. From the fourth semester onwards, you will choose two of the following four specialisations:
- AI Management
- E-Commerce & Digital Markets
- Digital Business Consulting
- Smart Logistics & Processes
At the same time, you will develop your soft skills – e.g. in project management, communication, self-organisation or interdisciplinary work – and train how to solve complex tasks in teams in a structured manner.
In the sixth semester, you will apply your knowledge directly in a company during an internship lasting at least 18 weeks. And in the seventh semester, you will write your bachelor's thesis – ideally on a practical problem from a company or your specialisation.
