Student Experience

In the Master of Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Applications (MAI) programme, we welcome international students from all over the world who come together to study at OTH Amberg-Weiden.
We have taken the time to interview students who are nearing the completion of their degrees so that you can gain insight into their academic journey, their experiences living and studying in Germany, and their perspectives as international students in the MAI programme.
Ammar Haider
I am Ammar from Pakistan. Before joining the Master of Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Applications (MAI) programme at OTH Amberg-Weiden, I studied Mechatronics in my home country. Coming to Germany and starting my studies here was challenging at first, as everything was new and unfamiliar. It felt like stepping into a completely different world. However, after some time, I adapted to the environment, understood the system better, and things gradually became easier and more comfortable.
What I appreciate most about the MAI programme is its strong industry focus and the close connection between professors and industry. The professors are very approachable and always available during consultation hours, which I found especially valuable as an international student. This direct access to academic support was one of the reasons I chose to study in Amberg in the first place.
During my studies, I particularly enjoyed courses like Deep Learning, where I was able to develop a deeper understanding of neural networks, AI frameworks, and their practical applications. I also really valued the project-based learning approach. One of the most interesting experiences for me was a project in the Embedded Intelligence course, where we used microcontrollers combined with AI to localize a person inside a building. It was fascinating to see how hardware and artificial intelligence can work together as a complete system.
Beyond technical knowledge, this programme has helped me develop important skills such as time management, adaptability, and especially problem-solving. I believe problem-solving is one of the most essential skills in the field of AI, particularly as the technology continues to evolve rapidly. The international environment here has also helped me grow personally by learning how to communicate and collaborate with people from different cultural backgrounds.
Another important aspect of my experience has been learning the German language. Living in Amberg provides many opportunities to interact with German speakers, which has helped me improve my language skills and integrate more into daily life. Outside of university, joining a local badminton club and participating in community activities allowed me to experience German culture more closely and build meaningful connections beyond the classroom.
In terms of my career journey, I feel that with the right planning and effort, it is absolutely possible to find good opportunities in Germany. During my time here, I had the chance to work at a startup in Berlin, where I gained experience in media-related work. Currently, I am working in a regional company in a data analyst role, which has allowed me to apply what I have learned in a practical setting.
Overall, my advice to future students is to stay open-minded, make use of the opportunities available, and not hesitate to ask for help when needed. The university provides strong support, but it is important to actively reach out and engage. With dedication and the right mindset, the MAI programme offers not only strong academic growth but also valuable personal and professional development.
Pallvi Pallvi
I am Pallvi from India. I completed my Bachelor’s in Computer Science in India and I am currently pursuing the Master’s in Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Applications (MAI) at OTH Amberg-Weiden.
As an international student, my journey started with both excitement and challenges. Coming from a large city, adjusting to a smaller town like Amberg took time, but I gradually adapted and began to really appreciate the environment and student life here.
What I value most about the MAI programme is its strong practical focus. We don’t just learn theory—we apply AI techniques to real-world problems through projects and assignments. The programme is very hands-on and industry-oriented, which makes learning much more meaningful.
The university environment is very supportive. Professors, the international office, and student assistants are always approachable. There are also many social events like barbecues, movie nights, and game days that help students connect and share cultures.
Academically, I have gained solid experience in machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing. I especially enjoyed working on projects like wound segmentation using deep learning and an AI Conference module where we analysed and presented research papers. A team project on a smart home system for elderly care was also very impactful.
One of my biggest challenges was balancing studies with part-time work, but I improved my time management by planning ahead. The university also supports students well in practical situations when needed, and the 24-hour library is especially helpful during exams and project work.
I am currently working as a working student, where I use tools like Google Analytics and support marketing performance tracking. I enjoy working in an international team and learning from colleagues from different backgrounds.
Outside of studies, I stay active through gym, jogging, and cycling, and I also enjoy university trips and social activities. These experiences have helped me explore Germany and build friendships.
Overall, my advice to future students is to stay open-minded, manage your time well, and take advantage of both academic and social opportunities. The MAI programme offers not only strong technical learning but also valuable personal and professional growth.
Thai Duc Hieu Tran
I am Hieu from Vietnam. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology in Vietnam and I am currently studying the Master’s in Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Applications (MAI) at OTH Amberg-Weiden.
As an international student, the beginning of my journey was both exciting and a bit nervous. However, I quickly felt welcomed, and I was fortunate to find accommodation in Amberg. From the start, I experienced a friendly and supportive environment, both from students and professors.
What I appreciate most about the MAI programme is its strong focus on machine learning and AI, as well as the emphasis on practical, project-based learning rather than only written exams. The programme helps me understand not just the surface of topics, but also the deeper concepts and how to apply them in real situations.
During my studies, I worked on several interesting projects. One of the most memorable was an autonomous robot project, where we built a virtual robot capable of navigating its environment. I also worked on a generative AI project to create image outputs. The autonomous robot project was especially challenging for me, as it was outside my comfort zone, but it helped me grow a lot by pushing me to learn over multiple semesters.
One of the most important lessons I have learned is to trust the process, work at my own pace, and not compare myself too much with others. I believe that success in a master’s programme takes time, patience, and consistency.
The support from professors has also been very strong. They are always willing to help students and guide them whenever needed. I also appreciate the overall learning environment, where you regularly meet both professors and classmates, which makes the experience more connected and engaging.
I am currently gaining work experience as a working student, which has helped me apply my skills in a real-world setting. Overall, I would say being prepared in programming and being open to continuous learning is very important for this programme.
Outside of studies, I enjoy the nature in and around Amberg and the friendly atmosphere of the local community. I often travel to nearby cities using my ticket or go hiking in the hills near the train station, which helps me relax when I feel stressed.
My favourite local dish is schnitzel, and I enjoy trying local food and experiencing German culture. One of the things I value most is the friendliness of people and the simple daily interactions, like greeting others in the street.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue working in Germany for some time after graduation and gain more professional experience, before eventually considering returning to my home country in the future.
