OLE MISS #1

Study Abroad in USA

This is my first article about my semester at the 'University of Mississippi'.

I hope you enjoy it.

My new hood

Hi y'all I'm Laura, a student at the OTH, my major is 'Media Production and Technologies'. But right now I'm doing a semester abroad. So I can announce myself as a proud student of the University of Mississippi, better known as the ‘Ole Miss' around here. A little more than a month I'm living now in Oxford, MS, it is a sweet little city here in the South. When you look around Oxford, you are surrounded of ‘Ole Miss’ signs. The bus driver drinks out of her Ole Miss to go Cup, every second car has a Ole Miss sign, Students, Professors, proud parents it seems like almost everyone wears Ole Miss cloth, mainly in red, light blue and dark blue, the university colors. More than half of the population here in Oxford are students, right now there are 24 000 Students. The big campus with 4856,23 quadrat meters, it feels like a small town. There are many buildings, in which you can study a variety of areas. There is a golf place, football fields, tennis places, and a sport center with a swimming pool in it, yeah, and this all in one campus. In addition to that about 5 000 Students are living directly on campus, in so called 'sororities' and 'fraternities'.

The first week on campus

The very first thing when I arrived was the tuberculosis testing – without testing there is no study. So after a short visit in the Health Care Center I could go from department to department and there I tried to get some courses that I needed or which I'm interested in. In the end I got only one course, which I need in Germany. But as a undergraduate student you have to take at least four courses, so I'm enrolled now in 'Web Design', 'Visual Thinking', 'Web Application Development', and 'English for Internationals'.

What I saw so far

About three weeks after my arrival here in the US, there was the first football game knocking on the door. Every football game is a huge event here! Especially on the first game day the stadium is crowded. And it's kind of funny because all the people wear clothes in the same color, there is a schedule that everyone knows what color to wear on which day. So on my first game day the crowd was painted in white. And for the people who do not want to see the game in the stadium, they can participate the 'grove'. There you can eat, drink, and bring your own tent to watch the game on television with your friends. You can get cards in a range from 7$ to 80$.

On the third game day I didn't visit the game, but I decided to help the 'Green Grove Organization'. We met about three hours before the game and asked all the people if they want to recycle and handed bags out.

I'm sure you heard about hurricane Harvey. It destroyed Texas and came pretty near to Oxford. So at one evening we had a hurricane and flood warning and the late classes were canceled. The weather was very windy and a lot of rain especially in the night. But I think Oxford got luck and nothing happened.
