System migration at the library successfully completed: new OPAC and more options for loans

On August 25th, following months of preparation in collaboration with the Verbundzentrale of the Bavarian Library Network, FOLIO—our new library management system—went live.
FOLIO stands for “The future of libraries is open,” and that holds true in every respect.
The system is completely open source; all data is stored on servers at the Leibniz Computing Center and not, for example, in the cloud of an international provider. This ensures that we retain control over all catalog, circulation, and user data at all times.
And what new features does FOLIO offer you, our users?
First and foremost, a new, more modern OPAC: https://katalog.oth-aw.de/
The OPAC login process is also changing: University members (i.e., students and staff) can now log in using their university ID and the corresponding password.
Longer loan periods—automatic renewals are now available: In addition to the standard 4-week loan period, borrowed books are automatically renewed 5 times (for students) or 4 times (for external users), each time for an additional four weeks.
If there are no holds on the item, students can keep borrowed books for up to 6 months, and external users for up to 5 months.OTH AW staff now have a loan period of 3 years, with two automatic renewals.
If there are no holds, staff members can keep borrowed books for up to 9 years.Change to the interlibrary loan service for articles: With the switch to FOLIO, the direct download link for users—which was previously included in the email notification—is no longer available.
Downloads are now available via the interlibrary loan account, which can be accessed after logging into OPAC via Account -> Orders -> Interlibrary Loan Orders (https://katalog.oth-aw.de/vufind/Holds/List). (This is also stated in the confirmation email that you will continue to receive upon successful completion of your order.)
As with any system change, we naturally still have a few areas that need work, but we’re already working hard to address them.
Currently, the self-service checkout system is not yet available. If you’d like to borrow books, please come to the circulation desk for the time being.
The interlibrary loan service for books is also still in development; we hope to be able to offer this service again in early to mid-September. However, the interlibrary loan service for articles should already be up and running again.Finally, a small request: most of the new developments and changes are falling on us as the library team, since some of the workflows are now completely different in the new system. So please be patient if things move a bit more slowly here over the next few weeks while we’re still getting familiar with the system.
We’re very much looking forward to offering you an even better, more efficient, and more appealing service with FOLIO in the future!
Course registration in Moodle

You will be able to enrol in your Moodle courses from Tuesday, 1 September 2026, at 7.00 am.
Please only enrol in courses that you will actually be able to take in the coming semester, so that you don't take places away from other students.First-year students can still enrol in Moodle courses even after lectures have started.
Further information will be provided at the first-year welcome event on 1 October 2026 and via email in advance.If you are unable to enrol in a course that you are required to take, please contact the relevant lecturers directly.
External beginners' courses in Weiden at VHS (A1.1, A1.2 and A2.1) starting mid September 2026

For those of you, who have only little knowledge of German, we have some good news!
Together with the VHS and our language centre, we are once more able to offer three levels of beginners' German courses at the vhs in Weiden.
Please note that this will be the last time that this will be tha last time that an A1.1 course will be offered and that this cooperation courses will eventually be running out.It only makes sense chosing one of these three courses, i.e. the one that corresponds to your level of German.
And should you already be advanced in your knowledge of German, then of course the free German courses of our language centre would be suitable for you.
The vhs offers A1.1, A1.2 and A2.1
The OTH language centre offers A2.2 (with the possibility of completing your immatriculartion requirement of A2), B1.1, B1.2 ..... up until C1.1The vhs courses are a special offer for IB students, who do not have A2 knowledge of German and are hence not able to complete their immatriculation with proof of A2 yet.
There is only a limited number of places. So first come, first served.

- registration is available now and takes place externally at the vhs via the link provided in this email below
- a registration fee of 100,- € along with a minimum 75% attendence is required. This registration fee will be reimbursed to those who fulfilled the attendance requirement
- please do not register if you are unable to attend the lectures regularly and on time, no latecomers will be admitted.
- please note that this is a supportive offer and that the three vhs course cannot be accredited, nor are they worth any credits and please note that you still need to complete your immatriculation by handing in proof of A2 knowledge

Important information about 24h-access to the library
Due to popular demand, here is all the information about 24-hour access to the library once again:
- You must complete a one-time training session to gain 24-hour access.- This training session takes place at the beginning of every semester and lasts one hour.
- Haven’t completed the training yet but want access now during exam time?
Please stop by the library and schedule an appointment with us. Make sure to allow plenty of time—at least 1 hour!- We can’t promise that you’ll be able to start the training right away when you talk to us.
- It is not enough to simply tell the library staff that you have already completed this training. We keep participant lists and can verify whether you have actually completed it. Please be honest with us.
- Training sessions offered through the library’s Moodle course are unrelated to this training. These sessions are intended to help you prepare for your bachelor’s thesis and do not count as training for 24-hour access.

Additional Information:The “MF” is located in the black lecture hall building between lecture halls 001 and 002.
Please also note: Some exams are held in multiple sessions. Please allow sufficient time and check with the respective examiner in the Moodle course to find out which session and room you will be taking the exam in.
